What to look for in a home air purifier
Start with the room. A typical HDB bedroom is around 12 m² with a ceiling near 2.6 m, which is roughly 31 m³ of air. At five air changes an hour you want about 155 m³/h of CADR. Anything labelled 'up to 40 m²' by the seller should be read as the maximum, not the comfortable figure.
Next check the filter stack: a pre-filter for hair and large dust, a HEPA layer for fine particles and an activated carbon layer for odours. Finally look at noise. A purifier you switch off at night because it is too loud does nothing for you.
Placement and running tips for Singapore homes
Run the purifier in a closed, air-conditioned room, because open windows keep feeding the room new particles faster than any home unit can remove them. Keep at least 20 to 30 cm of clear space around the intake and outlet, and avoid pushing it tight into a corner.
In our humid climate, wipe the pre-filter every couple of weeks and replace the main filter on the schedule in the manual. A clogged filter moves less air and can smell musty.
