Filter versus ionizer in a car
A true filter pulls cabin air through a layer of HEPA or carbon. An ionizer-only unit releases charged particles and relies on them settling on surfaces. Ionizers can produce small amounts of ozone, so look for an ozone-free statement in the listing.
